Lou Dalton Menswear Live Brief
Lou Dalton is one of the UKs most respected Menswear designers, known for producing contemporary and timeless collections with a strong personal narrative and an attention to technical skill and detail. We were invited to produce a collection of gender neutral fabrics for S/S 21 or A/W 21 based on core sustainable principles of reuse, recycle, reimagine and inspired by a Cornish narrative.
Living in Cornwall at the time I wanted to look at the origins of this very rich culture. Starting with the formation of Cornwall through Celtic origins I began with the Cornish language. Looking at typographic fonts in tandem with Cornish words like 'Kernow' inspiring one of the designs.
This then led me into the University archives where I found accounts of famous Cornish characters such as Dolly Pentreath and hand drawn maps from the 1600s with the old spellings of Cornish town names.
The aim for this project was to understand the Scotweave program as this was my first time creating anything through the method of Jacquard weaving. So for this, strong prints that work well with the chosen structures was the main focus and how material choice would affect this.
