What sort of world will we be living in years from now?
For this project, you are required to think and function future-thinking designer where the emphasis is on creating textiles for the year 2030 or beyond. It is a project where you set the agenda, one that encourages you to think outside of the box, to be curious, to be experimental, take risks and to influence. Connect outwards and respond to wider issues; local, national, global and consider the cause, effect and impact of the world we live in today and how that will potentially play out in the future.
What if we could grow eco-systems on our clothing, buildings and in our homes?
The idea was to produce self-sustaining fabric that could provide each of us with our own personal supply of oxygen and hydrothermal regulation. By integrating plants such as moss we can use their processes of respiration and photosynthesis to not only breathe again but begin replenishing the atmosphere.
The roots of the plants will become interwoven with the natural fibres so the already loosely woven material will become more durable over time.
Further research into looking at processes of Biomimicry and lab grown materials and their applications within textiles through already existing companies like Bolt Threads and Vollebak and artists such as Jun Kamei and Diana Scherer were huge inspirations throughout.
What if we could take the respiring proteins and cells and using biomimicry incorporate them into threads itself creating some kind of oxygen producing thread?
